The Western Isles have long held the fascination of painters, who for many decades have been captivated by the remarkable atmosphere that is unique to this location. Colin is no exception and feels a deep affinity with the Scottish landscape. He has visited fifteen of the Hebridean Islands where he has been attracted by the remoteness and traditional way of life of the islanders.

“The Hebridean Islands are like no other places I have visited. Each island has its own unique landscape – from ancient woodlands to sand dunes, sandy beaches, sea cliffs and sea lochs. You can escape it all – and the weather is always unpredictable. From rain to sunshine, colours change and there is constant drama in the skies. In an instant, land and sea are hardly visible and then within a short space of time, you can see for miles. its exciting and invigorating”. Colin Carruthers
