In the Autumn of 2021, I travelled to Aix-en-Provence in Southern France. I made a trip to one of the locations where Cezanne painted some of his views of Mont St. Victoire. This location is one of four sites on the “Cezanne Trail” and even though the location has changed over time, you can understand how the motif of the mountain fascinated and kept his attention in the years he studied it. “The Field of Painters” is translated from the French “Terrain des Peintres” and is actually a small terraced park based at 49 Avenue de Cezanne – just north of Cezanne’s studio. You really do get a dramatic view of Mont St. Victoire and in the garden there are reproductions of 8 of his paintings in the exact location where they were painted. I spent a couple of hours sketching amongst the olive and cypress trees, so typical of this region of France.
